PROGRAM
-
The abbey of San Galgano is a Cistercian abbey, about 30 kilometers from Siena, in the municipality of Chiusdino. The site is made up of the Hermitage and the great Abbey. The complex is named after Saint Galgano, a knight who lived in the mid 11th century in Chiusdino. He converted and dedicated himself to the hermit life after an unscrupulous youth.

ROTONDA DI MONTESIEPI
The Hermitage of Montesiepi is a chapel that was built after the death of San Galgano in 1181; it is also called Rotonda ("round") and it houses the sword which, according to legend, was planted in the rock by Galgano at the time of his conversion, transforming the symbolic object of his dissolute previous life into a cross in front of which he could pray. In the 14th century a rectangular chapel was added, frescoed by the sienese painter Ambrogio Lorenzetti.

ABBY OF SAN GALGANO
The Abbey was built during the 12 hundreds by Cistercian monks near the Merse river and along an important passage road, as was customary for buildings of this monastic order. After a long period of splendor, that slow decline began, that would have reduced it to its present appearance.

CHIUSDINO
It is a fortified medieval village located just over 30 kilometers south-west of Siena (48mi), on the road to Massa Marittima, on a promontory of the Metalliferous Hills.
The village still shows its medieval aspect and numerous places of interest such as the Church of Archangel Michael, the Church of Saint Martin and that of Saint Sebastian, the house of Galgano and the Civic and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.
